Chef-driven menus, scratch-made on-site. From intimate dinners to 300-guest galas across Silicon Valley.

Long after the flowers have been packed up and the music has faded, the thing wedding guests remember most is the food. Not whether it was catered — but whether it felt personal, whether it was good, whether it reflected the couple who planned it.
That's what Executive Chef Dan Figone and the Handheld team have built their reputation on since 2012. Chef-driven menus developed in conversation with each couple. Ingredients sourced from local farms. A full kitchen team on-site, building every dish from scratch — not reheating, not trucking in.
We've catered everything from 40-person garden receptions to 230-guest gala dinners under the lights at History Park San Jose. Whatever the scale, the standard stays the same.
Get a Custom Wedding QuoteEvery wedding has its own rhythm. We build your catering around the experience you want your guests to have — not a package off a shelf.
Each course delivered to every seat — white-glove service, precise timing, and a formal dining experience that matches the gravity of the occasion. Best for couples who want the most structured, elegant presentation.
Generous platters at every table — passed, shared, and celebrated together. The same format we used for the 230-guest History Park Gala dinner, where guests lingered and the energy stayed high throughout the evening.
Interactive and customizable — guests build their own plates from a curated spread. Ideal for varied dietary needs and guests who want flexibility. Station themes available: taco bars, carving stations, chef-attended action stations.
Cocktail receptions done right — our team circulates through the room with beautifully plated bites. Our signature Mille-Feuille Potato with Caviar is one of the most talked-about passed appetizers in Silicon Valley.
Your wedding menu isn't selected from a binder. It's built through a conversation — and confirmed at your table, with actual food in front of you. Here's how it works:
One of our Coordinators, Anna P. or An B. will walk through your vision, guest count, dietary needs, and service style preferences. No pressure — just a real conversation.
We draft a custom menu based on your conversation — seasonal ingredients, your flavor profile, and your service style. You'll see it on paper before you taste a bite.
Our Executive Chef and Culinary Team prepare the proposed menu for you to taste and refine. Most couples book 6–12 months out, with tastings scheduled 3–4 months before the event.
After tasting, you confirm the final menu, staffing, and timeline. From there, we handle every detail — all the way to the last plate cleared.
We don't ask you to take our word for it. Here's what Handheld catering actually looks like at scale.
History San Jose's annual fundraising gala: 230 guests, family-style service, outdoor evening setting. Production Manager Lisa B. coordinated a 20-minute delivery window with zero delays. Seasonal menu featured Chicken Piccata, scratch-made salads, and house-baked desserts — all produced from a mobile kitchen on-site.

In 2018, Handheld Catering became the first caterer in Silicon Valley to earn the California Green Business Certification — a third-party verified standard covering energy use, waste reduction, water conservation, and sustainable sourcing.
For eco-conscious couples, this matters. It's not a self-declared claim — it's an independent certification that no other Bay Area caterer has matched. We source locally, minimize single-use materials, and build our menus around what's in season.
Real answers to the questions couples are actually asking.
The Planning & Tasting Process
We start with a consultation with a Handheld Catering Coordinator to understand your vision and preferences. Once we've provided a preliminary proposal, we offer private tastings — typically 4–9 months before your date — so you can experience the quality and presentation firsthand. Tastings start at $100 per person, and that cost is applied to your event if you book with us.
We are equipped for everything from intimate elopements to grand celebrations of 1,000 guests. We request a minimum guest count at the time of booking, with your final guaranteed count due 14 days before the big day.
Most couples book 6–12 months in advance, especially for peak season dates (May–October). Popular weekends fill quickly. If your date is within 3 months, reach out anyway — we'll be honest about availability and may be able to accommodate last-minute bookings depending on our schedule.
Service & Staffing
To ensure exceptional hospitality, we follow these staffing standards: Plated Dinner — 1 server per 10–12 guests. Buffet/Stations — 1 server per 25 guests. Bar Service — 1 bartender per 75 guests for beer/wine, or 1 per 50 for a full bar with signature cocktails.
Bay Area parties are hard to stop! We charge for staff by the hour with a five-hour minimum. If your celebration runs longer than planned, we simply bill the additional hours based on the actual time worked by our crew.
Food, Drink & Dietary Needs
Absolutely. Inclusivity is a standard, not an upgrade. Whether you need vegan, gluten-free, or specific allergen-friendly meals (nut-free, dairy-free, and more), our chefs prepare these with the same care as the rest of the menu — scratch-made on-site with full control over every ingredient.
Yes — and we're fully insured for both food and alcohol service (Liquor Liability $1M/$2M through Hartford). We can provide professional bartenders, mixers, and ice. You're welcome to provide your own alcohol to save on costs, or we can coordinate a full-service bar package. We'll discuss during your consultation.
Venue Logistics & Operations
This is our specialty. With our mobile equipment, we can turn a Santa Cruz mountain clearing, a Silicon Valley rooftop, or a historic park (like History Park, where we served 230 guests) into a fully functioning kitchen. If there's a surface to work on, we can build a kitchen there.
Whether it's San Francisco fog or a sudden San Jose heatwave, we coordinate with you and your venue in advance to ensure we have the right kitchen tenting or cooling in place — keeping food at perfect temperature regardless of conditions.
Yes. We are a full-service caterer. We can manage the sourcing, delivery, and setup of everything from standard linens to specialty crystal, serving equipment, and more. Everything will be clearly itemized in your quote.
Pricing & The Bottom Line
Unlike a tip, the service charge covers the "unseen" labor — site visits, administrative coordination, packing, dishwashing, and the logistical heavy lifting that makes your event seamless. It's clearly outlined in every proposal.
Gratuity is not included in our proposals. While it is never expected, it is always appreciated by our hardworking service team if you feel they exceeded your expectations.
Yes — minimums vary based on the day of the week and the season. This ensures we can dedicate our full resources and staff to giving your wedding the attention it deserves. We'll confirm your minimum during your initial consultation.
Yes. Handheld Catering carries comprehensive Hartford business insurance including General Liability ($1M/$2M), Auto ($1M), Umbrella ($4M), Workers' Compensation ($1M), and Liquor Liability ($1M/$2M). We hold an active Santa Clara County Health Permit and HACCP Food Safety Certification. Certificate of insurance available upon request. View all credentials →
